That number is always wrong, because it bundles two completely different kinds of spending: a small set of fixed regulatory fees that are identical for every operator in the country, and a large set of discretionary purchases that depend entirely on what you intend to sell.

Three details are worth pulling out.
The $175 is set by the testing provider, not the FAA, and is paid when you book at an FAA-approved knowledge testing center. If you already hold a Part 61 pilot certificate with a current flight review, you skip the test entirely and take the free ALC-451 online course instead — your fixed cost drops to $5.
The $5 registration is per aircraft, and this catches people. Recreational registration costs the same $5 but covers every drone you own; Part 107 registration does not. A three-aircraft business pays three times, and again every three years.

The variable costs: where the real money goes
Aircraft. The widest line by far, from a few hundred dollars for a capable consumer platform to several thousand for an enterprise airframe. The honest guidance is to let the service dictate the aircraft rather than the reverse. Real estate media and basic inspection work do not require an expensive platform. Thermal inspection and survey-grade mapping do, and no amount of piloting skill substitutes for the sensor.
Payload. Frequently more expensive than the aircraft. A thermal camera is the common example, and it is what converts general aerial photography into a service with far fewer competitors.
Insurance. Not required by the FAA — the word does not appear anywhere in 14 CFR part 107 — but required by most commercial clients as a condition of site access. Software. Photogrammetry, mapping and thermal analysis tools are usually subscriptions, and they belong in your ongoing costs rather than your startup budget. For media work you may need nothing beyond editing software you already own.
Spares. Propellers, batteries and a case. Batteries in particular are consumable — they degrade with cycles, and replacing them is a recurring cost rather than a one-time purchase.
The ongoing costs nobody puts in the startup total
This is where startup-cost articles mislead most, because profitability is decided here rather than at launch.
Batteries degrade and get replaced. Software subscriptions renew monthly. Insurance renews annually or is bought per job. Registration renews every three years, per aircraft. Recurrent training comes round every 24 months — free, but it costs you time. Aircraft get damaged, and repair or replacement is a question of when rather than whether. Travel to sites is real money and real hours.
Batteries deserve a specific mention because they are the cost most often mistaken for a one-time purchase. They are rated in charge cycles, they lose usable capacity as those cycles accumulate, and a set that no longer holds a full flight is a set you replace whether or not it still powers up. Budget for them as a consumable, in the same mental category as fuel.
A useful discipline: work out your cost per job, not your cost to launch. If a roof inspection takes ninety minutes including travel and processing, and you priced it at a number that made sense against your startup spend rather than against your time and consumables, you will be busy and unprofitable.
What you can genuinely skip at the start
Several commonly recommended purchases are optional at the beginning, and treating them as mandatory is what inflates the totals you see elsewhere.
You do not need a business entity to satisfy the FAA — certificates are issued to individuals, and whether to form a company is a liability and tax question for a professional in your state. You do not need insurance before you have a client, in most cases. You do not need an enterprise aircraft to photograph a house. You do not need a website before you have made a single sale — your first several clients will come from calling businesses that already buy the service, as covered in drone business ideas.
Two categories are genuinely different: agricultural dispensing requires an Agricultural Aircraft Operator Certificate under 14 CFR part 137, and package delivery for compensation requires air carrier certification under part 135. Both carry substantially higher setup costs and neither is a Part 107 business.
